Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of the course, the students will:
- Know the basic types of soils and their properties, in relation to laboratory and field tests and design codes for civil engineering projects.
- Be able to calculate soil stresses.
- Understand the assessment of soil bearing capacity, as well as the calculation of soil settlements
- Understand the principles and methods of designing foundations, retaining walls and road embankments
- Know the basic methods for soil improvement.
Course Content (Syllabus)
Physical properties and classification of soils. Mechanical behavior of soil. Laboratory and field tests. Stresses and deformations of the soil. Bearing capacity of foundations. Settlements of structures. Stability of natural and artificial slopes. Embankments on soft soils. Methods of soil improvement. Subsoil classification on Seismic Codes.
