Course Content (Syllabus)
[202] History and Literature of the Church of Greece
The subject of this course is the History and Literature of the Church of Greece. The primary focus is the study and analysis of the formation of the Autocephalous Church of Greece as a consequence of the Greek Revolution, in 1821, and the formation of the modern Greek state. Furthermore, we examine the Church’s position on the geographical area of Greece before the Revolution of 1821, under the jurisdiction of the Ecumenical Patriarchate, closely analysing the conditions and the problems that arose for the ecclesiastical ones during the Revolution. Next, we examine the arbitrarily proclamation of Autocephaly by Otto's Regency and the conditions that led to the canonical proclamation of the Autocephaly of the Church of Greece by the Ecumenical Patriarchate in 1850. Finally, we divine into the ecclesiastical arrangement of the ‘New Countries’ with the Patriarchal and Synodal Act of 1928, after the Balkan Wars and the annexation of the ‘New Countries’ to the Greek state. The ecclesiastical personalities who played an important role in these developments as well as the ecclesiastical literature of the Church of Greece are also examined in the context of this course.
