It would be very helpful if the students are familiar with modern Greek Literature as well as with the most important historical events of Modern Greece.
Learning Outcomes
After the successful completion of the course, the students will be able to: 1. Have an overview of the evolution of modern Greek literature from the foundation of Greek state to the present era (1830-2000). 2. Realize the values and the criteria upon which the modern Greek literary canon has been constructed. Realize the continuities and discontinuities in the course of modern greek literature, as well as the literary movements that have been running through it. 3. Discern and form opinions on important issues of modern Greek culture. 4. Classify each one author into the literary school, generation or group he/she belongs. 5. Make appropriate use of the basic tools of Philology, such as the Histories of Literature and the Anthologies.

1. Introduction to literary history α) The origins or literary historiography in 19th century b) Basic concepts and problems of literary history. National soul, continuity c) The origins of literary history in Greece d) Characteristics of the history of modern greek literature e) Histories of modern greek literature that are in use today 2. Description
The presentation program Power Point will be used both by the professor and the students. Multimedia will be used as well, for example documentaries about certain authors, visualized poems from youtube, abstracts from films based on novels. A page on the e-learning platform will also be created.

Student Assessment
Description
The students assesment will be based on: a) written exam at the end of the semester b) group project on a certain author or group of authors and presentation in class c) group tutorials in the office during the group work. The criteria are: a) master of a general overview of the evolution of modern greek literature based on study of the bibliography and the attendance of classes b) deeper knowledge and historical valuation of a certain author on whom the project will have been made.The criteria will be announced both in first meeting and on the e-learning platform.
