Learning Outcomes
The course aims at familiarizing students with the process of regional spatial planning and especially the institutional framework, agencies and mechanisms of the spatial planning system in Greece. It also aims at clarifying the relationship of regional spatial planning with various types of Plans at different levels (local, urban, national, supra national). During the workshop part of the course, students work on a specific study area (Greek Region), focusing on aspects of spatial planning and getting familiarized with the elaboration of spatial Plans at the regional/strategic level.
Course Content (Syllabus)
The course is articulated in two parts: the theoretical and the workshop part.
In the theoretical part, the lectures cover the following topics:
-theoretical and methodological issues concerning the scope and content of regional spatial planning, the principles of sustainable development,
-the history and framework of regional spatial planning in Greece, current instruments of spatial planning and their application in practice
-spatial planning in areas with special characteristics, possibilities and problems (mountainous and rural areas, coastal and island areas, marine space).
-Protected Areas of natural and cultural importance in regional spatial planning.
In the workshop part, the class is divided into groups (which work mainly during the course), on a specific area (Greek region) and on topics included in the (Greek) specifications for the elaboration of Regional Spatial Plans. The aim is for students to become familiar with both issues of analysis and spatial planning proposals at the regional/strategic level.
