Course Content (Syllabus)
The intricate and complex process of acquiring a second language in diverse educational settings is the focus of this course. The many aspects of bilingualism are investigated by attending to issues of terminology and definition as well as analyzing a variety of language learning settings and learner characteristics. The linguistic, social and psychological factors pertaining to the second language learning process are examined; the role of the home language and the emphasis put in its maintenance in a language learning program (subtractive and additive bilingualism) are studied; differences and similarities between the processes of first and second language acquisition are identified; traditional and contemporary approaches to second language teaching are presented and critically assessed; good practice and practical strategies as well as assessment routines are presented, often co-constructed in class, so that future teachers are informed and trained to support and facilitate their students’ second language learning development.
