Learning Outcomes
At the end of this course students should be able to understand and investigate the moral consideration on transplantation of human tissues and organs from the point of view of Orthodox Bioethics. Moreover, the may approach and evaluate relevant ethical issues, such as the theological approach of organ donation, the medical ethos concerning donor and recipient, the autonomy and information of the living donor, the permissibility of compensation or reward, the approach of presumed consent and brain death.

Course Content (Syllabus)
This course concerns the moral consideration on transplantation of human tissues and organs from the point of view of Orthodox Bioethics. In this context the following issues are examined: 1. The historical background and the stand of the discussion today. 2. The theological argumentation against organ donation in the middle of the 20. century. 3. The theological approach in favour of organ donation as an act of love. 4. Is organ donation a moral duty for the Christian? Is ethically justifiable a donation which means self-sacrifice? 5. Medical ethos regarding the potential donor and recipient. 6. The autonomy of the donor as presupposion for accepting the organ donation. 7. The information of the donor for the potential implications as presupposion for accepting the organ donation. 8. The profit of the donor as presupposion for accepting the organ donation. 9. Should there be any limits concerning the person of the living donor? 10. Is a compensation or a reward of the living donor morally justifiable? 11. is the organ sales ethically justifiable? 12. The issue of brain death. 13. The position of the Orthodox Church.
