Learning Outcomes
Educational aims: (a) To acquire a general understanding of the scientific field of Applied Linguistics. (b) To familiarize with the sub-fields of applied linguistics, the research methodology and the experimental outcomes in relevant studies. (c) To be able to evaluate and use data of linguistic research. (d) To understand how applied outcomes inform linguistic theory and applications may be developed in other areas of research and education. (e) To be able to organize small-scale research projects in the field of applied linguistics.

Course Content (Syllabus)
Introduction to Applied Linguistics: Presentation and discussion of Theoretical and Applied Linguistics differences, the research methods of the fields of Applied Linguistics, the development of the first and the second/foreign language, bilingualism and bilingual education, the current educational practices and trends in educational linguistics, corpus linguistics and the use of child/adult corpora in education and language learning in particular. Presentation of developmental disorders and analysis of clinical data with an emphasis on how theoretical linguistics can be informed and interventions developed.

Assessment via (a) written exam (80% of final score) with open- and close-ended questions and (b) oral presentation (20% of the final score) of a research paper in the field of applied linguistics.
