General Prerequisites
The course introduces students to basic concepts and issues concerning the study of language as a social phenomenon, focusing on the role of language in constructing social identities. In particular, the concept and dimensions of linguistic variation (space as horizontal and vertical differentiation, situational context, language contact, worldview) are presented, which are related to the role of language as a symbol of social identity. The main theoretical perspectives in the study of social identities are discussed, giving emphasis on the transition from an essentialist to a constructionist approach. The social factors of social class, gender, age and ethnicity/ nationality are analyzed as basic components of a person's identity. The above theoretical concepts are applied to a wide range of texts from popular culture (advertisements, films, TV series) which represent through language (but also visually) different versions of social identities.
