General Prerequisites
The course introduces students to critical literacy issues. It is distinguished from functional literacy. It is linked to the development of those skills that will enable students / prospective citizens to function effectively in different communicative contexts but also to critically produce and receive a wide range of genres. It is examined at both a macro and a micro level. The macro-level concerns the dominant literacy practices of a linguistic community. The micro-level refers to the "critical language awareness", i.e. the sensitization of students to implicit ideological meanings produced in specific texts (e.g. racist use of language in the media). We will focus on the study of representations about Germans / Germany in Greece in a wide range of texts from public discourse (newspapers, advertising, television). The critical awareness of the ethno-cultural stereotypes accompanying German and ‘Germanness’ in Greece is particularly important for the teacher who is required to teach German as an optional course in the Greek school.
Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of the course the student will be able to: • understand the basic concepts related to critical literacy • has knowledge of some tools of critical discourse analysis • critically distinguish the linguistic mechanisms of text production and the ideological meanings inherent in them • use the methodologies of critical discourse analysis and critical literacy to identify the social and ideological parameters of language use in a variety of social practices

• Clarification of the concept of literacy • Types of literacy (autonomous and ideological model, multiliteracies, functional literacy • Critical literacy and different traditions (pedagogical, socio-cultural, linguistic, ethnographic) • Literacy practices – the school-home mismatch hypothesis • Critical discourse analysis as a tool for the critical approach to texts • Applications of critical discourse analysis to a wide range of texts of public discourse for Germany / German representations in Greece
