Learning Outcomes
The student is expected to:
1. Get the theoretical knowledge which is necessary for abutment teeth preparation for fixed dental restorations. He/she will be aware of the differences between laboratory and clinical practice, in order be able to complete the clinical stage of abutment tooth preparation for fixed prosthetic restorations. He/ she will also obtain the acquired theoretical background for the construction of provisional restorations in order to be able to transfer this knowledge to clinical practice.
2. Be familiar with the appropriate terminology of tools and materials and the use of tools and dental materials required for the preparation of teeth and the construction of provisional restorations.
3. Be trained in the use of appropriate cutting tools which are used in the preparation of teeth. Also, the student will be trained in the use of dental materials that are necessary for the construction of provisional restorations. Finally, the student is expected to be able to construct both provisional crowns and fixed provisional bridges.
4. Understand a.the main-basic principles concerning the depth of abutment teeth preparation and the required morphology of abutment teeth and b. the basic instructions for dental materials use. Also, the student is expected to know the main characteristics that a provisional restoration should have.
5. Develop skills concerning abutment teeth preparation and provisional restorations construction.
6. To be aware of the importance of periodontal tissue respect during abutment teeth preparation and construction of provisional restorations.
Course Content (Syllabus)
The aim of the course is the theoretical and laboratory training of undergraduate students to basic clinical procedures for the construction of fixed prosthetic restorations (Crowns and Fixed Partial Dentures). The course consists of amphitheatric lectures (1 hour / week) and pre-clinical laboratory exercise (3 hours / week) on plastic articulating mouth casts on phantom heads. The content covers a comprehensive presentation of the clinical stages required for the construction of a fixed prosthetic restoration and covers in detail all the sections relating to tooth preparation and construction of provisional/interim restorations. The performance of the students is evaluated with self-evaluation questionnaire(sheets) and final evaluation by the responsible faculty member, the successful completion of the laboratory exercise and a successful response to written exams at the end of the 5th semester.
