Learning Outcomes
Upon completion of this course, students will be able to:
1. Βe familiar with the scientific environmental terms related to pollution and protection of aquatic ecosystems and the atmosphere.
2. Understand the environmental pollutants, their sources and their impacts on the biotic and abiotic environment.
3. Know the measures, which must be taken by the environmental bodies and to know the every-day citizens appropriate behavior for a better environment.
4. Develop critical thinking skills for enabling application of "sustainable agricultural production systems" in order to protect the agroecosystems.
Course Content (Syllabus)
Environment and natural resources. Freshwater ecosystems. Water and air pollution. Pollutant categories and sources of pollution with an emphasis on pollutants from agricultural activity. Eutrophication. Acid rain and photochemical pollution. Water quality parameters and measurement methods. Ecotoxicology. Fundamental national, European and international legislation on the environment and in relation to agriculture. Environmental protection and restoration measures. Codes of good agricultural practice (fertilizers, pesticides). Greenhouse effect and agriculture. Stratospheric ozone. Current state of environmental pollution in Europe.
