Upon completion of this course, students will be able to:
1. Βe familiar with the scientific terms related to food industries and the relevant environmental pollution
2. Understand the wastes and pollutants, produced by food industries.
3. Know the necessity of the apropriate water management and the treatment and disposal of solid wastes and waste water produced by various food industries, in order to have safe food in a better environment.

Management of Water and Wastes in Agricultural Industries
Introduction and historical background of environmental pollution. definitions of relevant terms. Pollution of water, soil and atmosphere. Agriculture and environmental pollution. Food pollution. Waste and pollutants from food industries. Basic principles of waste management. Flowcharts. Waste separation. Mass balances. Rational use of water and recycling. Treatment and disposal of waste water. Limits values related to waste quality parameters. Relevant legislation. Primary treatment of wastewater. Secondary treatment (biological treatment). Wastewater treatment by the method of constructed wetlands. Tertiary treatment of wastewater. Water disinfection methods. Solid waste management. Byproducts utilisation in food industries. Decontamination cost . Waste management in dairy industry and dairy products, in fruit and vegetable processing industries, in olive processing and oil mills, in brewers, wineries and distilleries, in sugar industries, in meat, poultry, fish and mussels processing industries.
