Learning Outcomes
At the end of the course, students will be able to: 1) Understand the role and the importance of the cultivars in the production process 2) Plan and apply a simple breeding program. 3) Understand the importance and the application of the molecular and Biotectechnological approaches in plant breeding. 4) Carry on their role as mediators between the farmer and the breeder

Course Content (Syllabus)
The role and history of plant breeding in Agriculture. System of plant reproduction and exploitation in plant Breeding. The meaning of phenotype, genotype and genetic variability. Genotype x Environment interaction. Estimation of Genetic parameters & Field Experimental Designs. Plant Breeding Programm (design & steps/ aims and priorities). Type of cultivars (pure lines, hybrids, half sib , ful sib, mixtures, populations, synthetic varieties). and development of new varieties. Traits for improvement. Study of Heritability. Genetic basis of Selection. Genetic relationships, compining ability, parent selection, diallel crosses, Inbreeding & Heterosis. Principles & Methods in Plant Breeding Mass selection, Pedigree and Recurrent selection. Backcross method & evaluation of new cultivars. Applications of Biotechnology in Plant Breeding. In vitro techniques in plant breeding. Achievements of genetic engineering in plant breeding. Genetically modified plants with improved traits: Creation of resistant varieties to herbicides, insects, bacteria, viruses and extreme environmental conditions. Creation of varieties with exceptional characteristics and nutritional value. Tissue culture as a tool for genetic engineering, methods of genetic transformation, recombinant plasmids, transgene expression, genetic manipulation of chloroplastic DNA, synthetic nucleases- ZFNs. The issues and risks of biotechnological applications in agriculture. Molecular breeding & Marker assisted Selection. Application of a realistic plant breeding programm using conventional and biotechnological approaches
