Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of the course, students should be able: • To recognize the basic fields of the field of Applied Linguistics with a focus on the acquisition and learning of a second and foreign language and on educational linguistics. • To connect theory with practice and more specifically through applications in language education and in the acquisition / learning of Italian as an L2 in particular • to set research goals and conduct literature review or small-scale empirical study on issues in the field of applied linguistics.

Course Content (Syllabus)
Terminology-Scientific fields of Applied Linguistics. In the course there is a special reference in areas of applied linguistics with a focus on the acquisition and learning of a second and foreign language but also on educational linguistics. More specifically, fields / issues are studied such as: language education and second / foreign language teaching issues (teaching methods, curricula, teaching materials), language and educational needs analysis, bilingualism and linguistic diversity, sociolinguistic approaches and linguistic ideologies, language proficiency levels and different frameworks for language teaching and assessment, Council of Europe and ECML tools on language education policies, but also special issues such as second / foreign language for specific purposes, the language integration of refugees and immigrants but also the foreign languages in the special education. All the above issues are examined through applied research in L2 in general and in Italian as C2 in particular.

Description
There are 2 alternative ways of evaluation: 1. Continuous Assessment through a Final essay, submitted in stages during the semester • 1st phase-submission of 1st assignment: topic selection and rationale • 2nd phase-submission of 2nd assignment: Summary • 3rd phase-submission of 3rd assignment: Outline, design and literature review (1000-1500 words). • 4th phase submission of final essay: End of semester- public / online presentation (2500 words for individual work). If the student does not successfully complete any of the stages of the continuous assessment through assignments, he / she is led to a final examination. To participate in the ongoing assessment process, it is recommended to attend the course and participate in discussions and related activities. 2. Final Examination
