Course Content (Syllabus)
The subject of the course is the historical course of art in the Italian region from its beginnings to the 12th century AD. It has as its starting point the three periods of ancient Greek art: the Archaic, the Classical and the Hellenistic, which lays the foundations for its later artistic course in sculpture, painting and architecture. The artistic elements of the Etruscan art that will survive in the artistic production of the Roman period are examined, as well as the expressions and manifestations of Roman art during the historical periods of its reign, democracy and empire respectively and the early Christian art as a symbolical expression and a reflection of the spirituality of the new religion.The presence of Byzantine art in Italy through the centuries (e.g. Ravenna, Sicily), Romanesque and Gothic art on the Italian peninsula as an expression of cultural, religious and economic life in the Middle Ages and the representational situation during the pre-Renaissance period and before Giotto's innovations will also be examined.
