Learning Outcomes
Upon completion of the lectures students will be able to: -know and become familiar with the multiplicity of expressions and events, political, religious and secret, within the house of Islam -understand the cultural, historical, theological and political causes of the diversification and development of the various branches of Islam -know the phenomenon of political Islam and its various expressions -understand the nature of Muslim mysticism and its various expressions

Course Content (Syllabus)
Sufism and turuk (tariqats). Students will be informed about the diversity that exists in the Islamic world and they will understand the main branches of sunnis and shiis. They will learn about their theology and the evolution of these two branches, with a special reference to the shiis. At the same time they will be informed about the empirical and spiritual understanding of Islam from the diverse sufi branches. They will follow the evolution of Sufism during the formative, classic, modern and contemporary times.
