Course Content (Syllabus)
This course is divided into two units. Firstly, lives and teaching of Church Fathers and main issues of ecclesiastical literature and Orthodox theology are studied and secondly, there is an historical-philological analysis of their works. Each writer or Church Father is located on a place, time and spiritual context. The course will figure out the way he interacts in relation with certain social, political, theological and ecclesiastical facts. The second unit is an introduction to issues of patristic interpretation. It examines the problem of the interpretation of Christian literature. The methods of interpretation, chosen by Fathers, will be presented and there will be a discussion about their impact on contemporary spiritual matters. The approach is based on the patristic texts, which are analyzed during the course.
