Required Courses
  • 01EA10 INTRODUCTION TO DESIGN 1
  • 02EA10 INTRODUCTION TO DESIGN 2
General Prerequisites
The course introduces the student with the design process of a building of middle-level compositional complexity in natural or urban context. The design studio course can provide individual English-based tutoring for visiting students from abroad.
Learning Outcomes
The students are expected to familiarize themselves and be introduced with: -the special conditions of embodying a shelter in the natural setting -the critical exploration of various compositional and building principles -the understanding of the architectural activity as a significant thinking and design process -the functional organization of a building with middle-level complexity - environmental design aspects The design studio course provides individual English-based tutoring for visiting students from abroad.
General Competences
  • Apply knowledge in practice
  • Retrieve, analyse and synthesise data and information, with the use of necessary technologies
  • Adapt to new situations
  • Make decisions
  • Work in teams
  • Respect natural environment
  • Be critical and self-critical
  • Advance free, creative and causative thinking
Course Content (Syllabus)
The undergraduate design studio focuses on the spatial exploration of inhabiting the natural landscape without competing it. From within the task of designing a building with middle-level compositional complexity and with a basic functional program, the students attempt to experiment themselves with the different versions of the structural relationship between the shell of the building and the surrounding environment. In an attempt to synthesize the local with the broad context, they train themselves in ways with which the design of space can define aspects of connecting the human dimension with the natural environment. The main task of the course is the integration of the proposal in its context depending on the type and scale of the shelter, its harmonization with the context (mountainous, coastal or suburban), the conjunction of the inner and outer spaces (closed, outdoor or semi-outdoor spaces), the significance of the materials and the sustainable dimension of the proposal.
