Course Content (Syllabus)
Interventions in a historical anthropogenic environment face issues of memory, identity, time, protection and management of cultural resources. These issues require a special approach, training and sensitivity for those involved in architectural design. The course seeks to initiate an effort to fill theoretical and educational gaps in this direction. It will include lectures by both lecturers and guest speakers on topics concerning the fundamental relationship between architecture and time through the history and theory of restorations and the critical approach to historical space and its management. In this context, it will also deal with specific issues of memory, space and planning both through theoretical approaches as well as through the presentation of internationally applied examples . The aim of the course is to raise students' awareness on issues of architectural legacy management, through the acquaintance with the history and theory of "restoration" and with contemporary theoretical approaches to space, place, time, memory and historical environment . The course's objectives include also the students' understanding of the theoretical principles of the regulatory framework for the management of historical sites, as well as the students' familiarization with issues of time and architecture. Students will have to present an essay , the topic of which will be defined in consultation with the lecturers. Essays will be dealing with the investigation of theoretical questions or with the critical approach of applied examples in the frame of the theoretical issues examined during the course. The thematic sections of the lectures will generally include: a) space time and memory issues b) history and theory of restorations c) space and memory: genius loci d) architectural legacy and cultural narratives
