Course Content (Syllabus)
The studio delves into the character, role and use of public space in the everyday life of the city with the aim of inclusive design, environmental sustainability and democratic management. The workshop is organised in two phases. a Dimension of the public: Researching the field The first concerns qualitative research methods aimed at understanding the social, political and cultural values and processes that continuously shape public space. It delves into the different conceptualisations of the public character of public space, its relationship with the public sphere and the right to the city, as well as its constant transformations in the context of contemporary urbanisation. Emphasis is placed on qualitative methods that attempt to record and understand the characteristics, multiple divisions, conflicts, exclusions, appropriations and claims of the everyday use of public space. The phase lasts 5 weeks b. Planning the process:Participation protocols The second phase involves the design of a specific public space through a participatory process that integrates its different users and promotes inclusion, equality and democracy. The final objective is not a detailed and consolidated design scheme, but the formulation of guidelines and tools that will enrich public space design with the desires and needs of everyday users. The phase will last 8 weeks
