Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of the course: students will be able: 1. Students will be able to understand the multi-level and multi-dimensional relationship that developed between Church and State from the time of the first Christian Community to the time of modern nation-states. 2. In addition, students in collaboration with the teacher will be asked to approach the causes of the dynamic changes observed in this relationship over the course of history. 3. Additionally, students will be able to trace the causes and processes behind the establishment of national Churches. 4. Finally, students will understand how much the transition from the age of empires to that of nation-states changed the relationship between Church and state.

Course Content (Syllabus)
The course examines the relations between Church and State from the Roman period to the present day. Particular emphasis is placed on the changes that occurred for the Church due to the transition from the Roman to the Byzantine era, from the Byzantine to the Ottoman era, and from the Ottoman period to the era of modern nation states. 1. Relations of Church and State during the era of the New Testament 2. Relations between Church and State during the Roman period 3. Relations between Church and State during the reign of Constantine the Great 4. Relations of Church and State from the 4th to the 6th century 5. Church-State relations in the age of Emperor Justinian 6. Relations of Church and State from the 7th to the 9th century 7. Relations of Church and State from the 9th to the 13th century 8.
