Learning Outcomes
The purpose of the course is to understand the everyday life of the monks on Mount Athos during the Byzantine and post-Byzantine period, by the study of the written sources, the objects, and the archaeological evidence.
Course Content (Syllabus)
1. Brief historical introduction. The organization and building structure of an Athonite monastery: the role of the katholikon and the other buildings.
2. The needs of daily life: hospitality and production of foodstuffs and the necessary building infrastructure (A)
3. The needs of daily life: hospitality and the production of basic foodstuffs and the necessary building infrastructure (B)
4. Attendance at the International Scientific Workshop of the Mount Athos Center.
5. Archaeological evidence of daily life. The contribution of written sources to the knowledge of everyday life
6. The economy of the monasteries (crops, etc.). The center of Karyes: daily life and the functions of a monastic capital diachronically. Typika and the Vitae of Saints as a source of information on daily life
7. The structure of hierarchy in monastic brotherhoods. The participation of pilgrims in monastic life. The dependencies (sketes, cells, kathismata, etc.), daily life in them and their role. Monk’s works in the late Byzantine and post-Byzantine period. Aspects of everyday life on Mount Athos through the writings of travelers.
8. The interior decoration of the Athonite churches. Liturgical vessels and sacred objects. Liturgical and priestly vestments. Monk craftsmen and artists.
9. Integration into the Ottoman reality and adaptation to the new regime. Relations with the Ottoman administration. The turn to the Orthodox world (Balkan countries, Russia): the fundraising. From fundraising to the metochion. The difficult years of the Revolution and the post-revolutionary period.
10. The relationship of the monks with the past and the reception of antiquity. The establishment of archaeological and folklore 'collections' in various monasteries.
11. The sacristy of the monasteries of Mount Athos.
12. Conferences and Exhibitions on the life and art of Mount Athos.
13. Presentation of works. Review of the taught material.
