Learning Outcomes
Upon completion of the course students will be able
-To consider poetry in its entanglement with its contemporary as well as today’s social and political context conceptualizing the Politics of Poetics.
-To explore poetic innovations in aesthetics and modes and investigate their impact on world literature.
-To examine the role of an outstanding poet in shaping access to cultural texts in combining the close reading of texts with an historical overview.
-To combine theory with its application on texts as the students design their own approaches.
-To implement aesthetic and contextual approaches investigating recurring themes and motifs.
-To develop a method and construct a system in organizing intensive close up readings of texts.
-To collect and arrange appropriate research data in evaluating their significance for assignment planning.
-To develop skills in the close examination of texts and in making thematic and formal connections between them.
-To appreciate the use of technology and operate it effectively in the delivery of instruction, assessment and professional development.
Course Content (Syllabus)
The course duels on Seferis's representation of multiform Cavafy as Proteus in bringing out the specific features and traits of Cavafy's poetics by reading and approaching his poems, their reception and criticism, theories that were developed and understanding that was formed both through his and other's views: historical Cavafy, philosophical Cavafy, political Cavafy, erotic Cavafy, aesthetic/aestheticist Cavafy, realist Cavafy, romantic Cavafy, parnassian Cavafy, symbolist Cavafy, alexandrian Cavafy, hellenistic Cavafy...
