Learning Outcomes
•Appreciate the geological model of the regional area and translate the geological condition to the scale of the project.
•Organise a site investigation program according to the needs and characteristics of the engineering works.
•Process a large number of geological and geotechnical data.
•Select the appropriate data for the design of an engineering project.
•Evaluate the data in qualitative and quantitative terms for the design of a dam, a slope cut, a tunnel, a foundation.
•Detect the location and evaluate the extent of geohazards and failures along, upon, below and engineering work.
•Present the data in tables, diagrams and the results in report under specific guidelines.
•Draw longitudinal and cross sections for certain projects.
•Work on specific softwares for the analyses of geological and geotechnical data.
Field Trip Learning Outcomes
1.Put theory into context and in the appropriate scale of the relevant project. The geological observations and linked and translated for the needs of the design of an engineering work.
2.Understand the different quality of the ground, the different failure mechanisms according to the geometry of the engineering work and the ground structural and mechanical characteristics. This is done in the real scale here, in a real project.
3.Collect data of rock joints (geometrical and mechanical), they perform rock mass classifications (RQD, GSI and others), they evaluate the ground strength with index tests or macriscopical characterisation, they evaluate them and select the appropriate geotechnical parameters for the stability analysis in a certain problem-work.
4.Understand their role and responsibility as geologists in a design of an engineering work for a safe and economical construction and operation.
