Learning Outcomes

Learning and application of the most widely used climatic classifications 4. Understanding and learning the prevailing characteristics of the climate and climate changes of the past.

Course Content (Syllabus)
Introduction: Weather and Climate, Objectives and climatology sectors, Climate factors. Solar Radiation: Solar Energy, Energy and transportation, Atmosphere and soil interactions, Energy Balance, Solar duration. Temperature: Temperature parameters, Temperature earth distribution, Temperature distribution over the Mediterranean and Greek region, Solar and water Temperatures. Precipitation: Spatial distribution of Clouds and precipitation, physical factors of the precipitation distribution, daily and annual rainfall distribution, Geographical distribution of rainfall. General Atmospheric Circulation: Winds, Local winds, horizontal pressure distribution, horizontal pressure distribution, air masses, classification, main atmospheric systems. Climate description: Analysis and geographical distributions of the climates on a global scale, Different climatic areas and climates over the planet, Climatic classifications. Paleoclimatology: Geological centuries and climate evolution, Proxy data for climate reconstruction, dating methods, The main physical causes for climate change (continent movements, volcanos, Milankovitch circles, solar activity). Laboratory exercises outline: • Educational exercises and labs on the statistical analysis of temperature time-series –An introduction to the basic climatic statistical methods. • Educational exercises and labs on the study and interpretation of temperature series on different time – scales. • Educational exercises and labs aiming on the study of the spatial distribution of temperatures. • Educational exercises and labs under the goal of introducing to the students how to use observational data from the meteorological station of the Department – Use of the Observations. • Educational exercises on spotting and understating the differences on the behavior and characteristics of air and soil temperatures • Educational exercises on introducing the philosophy under the climatic classifications – An application of the Gorzinsky Classification. • Educational exercises on the analysis of precipitation data (intensity, daily, monthly and annual totals) – Use of climatic rainfall maps. • Educational exercises on the classification of different areas according to the annual precipitation distribution. • Educational exercises on the definition of the dry and wet periods using Gaussen diagrams and climograms. • Educational exercises on the climatic classification of different stations using the Köppen classification. Meteorological data archives for the description of the climates according to the Köppen classification.
