Learning Outcomes
1)Organise a site investigation program for boreholes: detect the number, their depth and their location. 2)Drilling and sampling methods (Samplers according to the type of ground) 3)To record and evaluate borehole samples and in situ tests 4)Borehole and well logging techniques 5)Methods of well drilling, completion and development Field Trip Learning outcomes 1.Apply theory into context (train in a real time situation). 2.Understand better the principles of drilling techniques. 3.Are trained to the responsibilities and tasks of a geologist supervising a borehole. 4.Explore in detail and understand, through conversation with the drilling operators, specific issues of borehole/well drilling techniques.
General Competences
  • Apply knowledge in practice
  • Retrieve, analyse and synthesise data and information, with the use of necessary technologies
  • Respect natural environment
Course Content (Syllabus)
•Introduction to drilling techniques (historic review, basic concept and principles) •Methods of drilling •Drilling planning for geotechnical purposes •Methods of sampling •Borehole logging •Evaluation of boreholes and in situ testing •Hydro mastic projects •Methods of Borehole/Well drilling •Borehole/Well completion •Borehole/Well development •Well logging Field Trip In the frame of the course, a one-day field trip takes place in the region of Central Macedonia where either a borehore or a well is drilled. The field trip includes the viewing of the drilling, geologic observations in order to justify the scope of the works, presentation of drilling techniques-types of samplers-types of boring heads, in situ field testing and borehole logging techniques according to the projects’ specifications.
