Learning Outcomes
About the subject: 1. Understanding the basic characteristics of the atmosphere. 2. Understanding of the physical processes that control the weather of a region. 3. Understanding the characteristics of the meteorological parameters (solar and earth radiation, pressure, temperature, precipitation, wind, etc.). 4. Ability to interpret meteorological phenomena in relation to the physical and dynamical processes governing them such as radiation, thermodynamics, dynamics and microphysics of the atmosphere. 5. Knowledge of the operation and use of meteorological instruments and techniques for data collection and interpretation. 6. Ability to interpret meteorological maps. 7. Ability for oral and written communication on weather. About the acquired skills: 1. Knowledge of the relation between meteorology and environmental and social sciences highlighting the importance of meteorology. 2. Acquisition of skills related to weather forecasting. 3. Acquisition of the fundamental knowledge for graduate studies in meteorology, climatology and atmospheric sciences

Course Content (Syllabus)
1) Introduction and structure of the atmosphere. Introduction to the subject of Meteorology. The atmosphere and its structure. Extent, composition and total mass of the earth's atmosphere. Vertical distribution of the atmosphere. The elliptical orbit of the earth around the sun. 2) Electromagnetic spectrum. Basic parameters of radiation. Radiation laws. Solar station. The solar radiation in the atmosphere. The intensity of solar radiation on the surface of the earth and the factors that affect it. Earth radiation. 3) Temperature of the atmosphere. Temperature measurement. Heating the atmosphere. Variation of air temperature with height. The greenhouse effect. 4) Humidity of the atmosphere. Hygrometric parameters. Humidity measurement. Dew-point temperature. Absolute humidity. Water vapor mixing ratio and specific humidity. Relative humidity. Precipitable water. 5) Atmospheric pressure. Hydrostatic equation. The change in atmospheric pressure with height. Isobars. Isopleths of height and thickness. Measurement of atmospheric pressure. Wind and wind measurement. Forces that regulate the wind. 6) Atmospheric thermodynamics. Thermodynamic systems. Thermodynamic characteristics of dry and wet air. Equation of state for dry and moist air. Specific air heat. The first law of thermodynamics. Non adiabatic and adiabatic changes. Poisson equation and potential temperature. Upward and downward movements in the atmosphere. 7) Static of the atmosphere. Sample method. Investigation of static equilibrium in the atmosphere. Stability and instability of unsaturated and saturated air. 8) Condensation - clouds - precipitation. Cloud classification. Cloud cover. Fog and fog categories. Dew and frost. Rain, snow and hail. Precipitation categories depending on the way the rain clouds form. Rain generation mechanisms. 9) Atmospheric depressions. Characteristics of air masses. Frontal surfaces and fronts - Weather systems. Depressions and categories of depressions. Cyclones and cyclogenesis. Anticyclones and types of anticyclones. Laboratory teaching exercises outline • Radiation - Observation - Methods of calculation - recording. • Radiation - Processing of solar radiation data. Laboratory exercises. • Temperature - Observation - Recording. • Temperature: Analysis of tapes and data processing. • Humidity - Observation - Recording. • Humidity - Methods for calculating hygrometric parameters and processing of moisture data. Laboratory Exercises. • Rain - Observation - Recording and analysis of precipitation data (intensity - duration). • Wind - Observation, recording and analysis of results. • Atmospheric Pressure - Observation - Recording. • Atmospheric Pressure - Analysis of tapes and data processing. Laboratory Exercises • Meteorological Observation (*) - Clouds - Wind - Radiation - Visibility. • Meteorological Observation (*) - Meteorological shelter - Rain - Evaporation - Ground Temperatures. (*):The last two laboratories are held outdoors at the AUTH Meteorological Station.
