Learning Outcomes
At the end of this course, the students will be able to: • Have an understanding of the hydrological cycle and its components. • Process and measure/estimate the depth of rain and snow on the main temporal and spatial (station and basin level) scales. • Have an understanding of drought characteristics, its types and their order of occurrence. They will know about drought indicators and their categories. • Have an understanding of soils characteristics and their relationship to soil moisture. • Know about the conditions favoring floods and their relationship to rain. Plot flood sensitivity maps on basin level.
General Competences
  • Apply knowledge in practice
  • Retrieve, analyse and synthesise data and information, with the use of necessary technologies
  • Make decisions
  • Work autonomously
  • Be critical and self-critical
Course Content (Syllabus)
• The hydrologic cycle and its components. • Precipitation: causes of precipitation, measurement of precipitation (rain gages, types of rain gages) and data analysis. Rainfall distributions and return periods. Storm analysis. • Snow: snow water equivalent, snow characteristics, snowmelt modeling over a watershed, snow cover distribution, critical temperature for rain-snow transition. • Droughts: definition, types and timing of droughts. Drought indices. • Soil moisture: soil structure, soil classification, soil water relationships, factors affecting water movement into and through the soils. • Floods: flood analysis, hydrograms, extreme river flow analysis, rainfall-runoff relationships (crosscorrelation). Assessment of flood vulnerability. Plotting flood sensitivity maps: implementation at basin level
