Learning Outcomes
The students by the end of the semester will have: 1. Acquired a special knowledge of the central political, ideological, historical, sociological and cultural perspectives of the thematic under examination. 2. Understood the theoretical axes of the secularization process in Greece and the EU. 3. Been acquainted with the basic results of qualitative and quantitative research on the place and role of religion in the modern world. 4. Practiced in the analysis and interpretation of the political governance on questions of the religious agenda.

Course Content (Syllabus)
The course examines the political dimensions of the religious phenomenon, specifically aiming at the critical investigation of the positive and/or negative role of religion in shaping modernity. In this direction, the focus of interest includes: - the examination of the secularization process. - the analysis of the relationship between religion and nationalism. - the explanation of the basic patterns of political theology in Christianity and Islam. - the understanding of religious fundamentalism, and the role of colonialism in its development. - the clarification of the significance of the religious factor in shaping state and international politics. The course will have a seminar format. Students are expected to present a relevant scientific work (book or article) and to write a paper on a topic of their interest in collaboration with the instructor.
