Learning Outcomes
Students are expected to: Understand the meaning of architecture and the built environment in general, as well as the meaning of space and its perception in different eras Expand their humanitarian education Understand and appreciate the monuments of the past, distant and most recent, and become aware of architectural heritage issues Understand the relationship between architecture and the visual and applied arts Practice observing and interpreting the bulit environment and improve their expressive skills in their artistic field Gain didactic and pedagogical competence Get to know and learn the architectural achievements from the Renaissance to the dawn of the twentieth century

Course Content (Syllabus)
1. Early Renaissance in Florence. Brunelleschi and Alberti. 2. High Renaissance in Rome. Bramante. Late Renaissance and Mannerism. Μichellangelo and Palladio. 3. Renaissance beyond the Alps. France, Spain and England. The French Classicism. 4. The Baroque in Italy. 5. The 17th century in France. Baroque and Rococo in German speaking countries, England and Spain. 6. The return to Classicism in England and France. The Palladian revival and the archaeological Neoclassicism. Revolutionary/Visionary Neoclassicism. 7. Romanticism and the cult of sensibility. The Sublime and the Picturesque. The Gothic Revival. The English landscape garden. 8. The 19th century. International Neoclassicism. Germany, England, France and Russia. The Greek Revival in the USA. 9. The École des Beaux-Arts. Historicism and Eclecticism. Early and High Gothic Revival in England. 10. Architecture in Greece during the 19th century. Greek Neoclassicism. Neoclassicism, Historicism and Eclecticism in Thessaloniki. 11. The architecture of Technology. Iron and steel constructions. Bridges, factories, markets, railway stations. The International Exhibitions. 12. The Chicago School and the birth of the Skyscraper. 13. The Arts and Crafts movement. The revival of traditional architecture. The Art Nouveau.
