Learning Outcomes
The students should be able to: 1) analyze single-phase and three-phase circuits with diodes and thyristors 2) calculate the waveforms of the currents and voltages at the dc and ac part of various power-electronic converters 3) calculate in a mathematical way the level of the dc currents and voltages and of the ac currents of various power-electronic converters implemented with diodes or thyristors 4) calculate the current harmonic distortion at the ac side of the power-electronic converters 5) calculate the voltage harmonic distortion at the point of common coupling of the converter with the power grid.

Course Content (Syllabus)
Properties and operation of the most commonly used power electronic switches (diodes, thyristors, IGBTs, MOSFETs, etc). Ssimple diode-rectifier circuits. Single-phase full-bridge diode rectifier with constant current or constant voltage load. Current commutation phenomenon. Current harmonics caused by the operation of single-phase full-bridge diode rectifiers. The effect of the current harmonics on the voltage harmonics is also addressed. Three-phase full-bridge diode rectifier with constant current or constant voltage load. Simple dc-ac rectifier circuits using thyristors. Single-phase and three-phase full-bridge implementing thyristors for the control of the dc voltage. Rectifying and inverting actions are addressed. Single-phase and three-phase full-bridge implementing thyristors for the control of the dc voltage. The most common power quality problems arising by the operation of thyristors bridges.

Student Assessment
Description
1) To each group of 3 students, a project is assigned. The written essay of the project is examined and gets a grade. A period of at least one month is given to each group to carry out the project and write the essay. The essay must be submitted 10 days before the oral examination of the students. 2) The students, in groups of 5, may attend an optional lab exercise. A written essay is submitted after the execution of the lab exercise. 3) The students are examined orally. 4) the final grade of the course is deduced as a combination of 1), 2) and 3) with 3) having the largest weight.
