Learning Outcomes
With the succesful completion of the course, the students are expected:
- To indentify the pathology of concrete or masonry structures
- To understand the deterioration mechanism
- To be able to quantify deterioration
- To choose repair methods and alternatives based on cost and performance of the materials and the repair methods
Course Content (Syllabus)
Repair of structures; Financial and environmental approach - Methodology for restoration works. Categorization of structures. Concrete structures: concrete pathology inspection. Damage identification and damage mechanisms causality and categorization. Non destructive testing. Protective measures. Connection of problems with time and cause. Corrosion of reinforcing steel - mechanism - protective measures - methods of reducing corrosion. Pathology case studies and modern repair methods. Repair methods - Grouts - Shotcrete. Reinforced concrete rehabilitation in structures near and inside seawater.
Historical masonry construction; Particularities of historical buildings and regulatory framework. Traditional building materials. Problems of modern and historical masonry. Strain monitoring methods. Compatibility of repair materials. Materials and methods of masonry repair. Restoration performance tests.
