After the successful completion of the course, the students are expected to:
• understand the basic principles of road project design
• be familiar with the equations of design
• learn to analyze, judge and compose different design criteria
• practice in planning through appropriate applications
Course Content (Syllabus)
Introduction. Basic elements of geometric design. Design speed, operating speed V85, maximum allowable speed. Horizontal alignment: tangents, spiral curve transitions, circular curves,clothoid. Vertical alignment, profile diagram: grades, sag and crest vertical curves. Cross sectional elements and cross slope. Superelevation run-off lengths. Illustrative cross sections. Role of sight distances in planning and design of highways.Fitting alignment to topography. Introduction of interchanges design.
