Learning Outcomes
It is expected that with the successful completion of the course the students:
-will understand the relationship between architectural design and buildings environmental performance,
-will have a sound knowledge on the basic requirements and provisions of the New Building Regulation (N.O.K.),
-will understand the concepts of buildings environmental performance and its assessment, as well as of building components and materials life cycle analysis,
-will be familiar with the content and the assessment parameters of the basic axes of buildings environmental performance (energy performance, site-related parameters, economic and social factors, indoor environment quality, environmental loadings, estimation and consideration of building components and materials service life, etc.),
-will understand the basic principles behind widely accepted tools for the assessment of buildings environmental performance and for building materials and components life cycle analysis,
-will understand the basic elements of the greek regulation for sound protection/insulation (in the context of the analysis of the quality of the indoor environment) and
-will acquire basic knowledge about the european regulations framework as well as about the practices currently applied relatively to the implementation of sustainability principles in the building sector.
Course Content (Syllabus)
Building sector and environment. Implementation of sustainability principles in the building sector. Environmental performance of buildings: dimensions, parameters (energy performance, site-related parameters, economic and social factors, indoor environment quality, environmental loadings, etc.) and assessment (criteria, methods and computational tools). Architectural design and environment. Dimensions of buildings environmental performance related to the building's site. Elements of the New Building Regulation (N.O.K.). Life cycle analysis (L.C.A.) of buildings, building components and materials: definitions, principles, methods, databases and tools. Influence of building components and materials service life duration and performance variation in time on buildings environmental performance. Service life duration of buildings and building components (deterioration factors, etc.). Examples of application of buildings environmental performance assessment methods.
