Learning Outcomes
After the successful completion of "Metal Structures I" course, the students are expected to: 1) Identify basic applications of steel in construction sector (Morphology, static systems) 2) Be able to calculate and design the roof a single storey steel industrial building according to Eurocode 3 3) Be able to cope with several loss-of-stability issues of steel elements and members-Buckling effects

Course Content (Syllabus)
Structural steel material properties and applications in construction. Contemporary design codes for structural steelwork. Eurocode 3 specifications and design criteria. Serviceability and Ultimate limit states. Classification of steel cross-sections. Local buckling approach. Analysis and design of steel members subjected to tension, compression, bending, shear and/or torsion. Evaluation of Eurocode 3 design buckling resistance. Steel trusses. Design procedures for buckling effects-Lateral, torsional and lateral-torsional buckling. Analysis of wind effects on steel structures and earthquake resistance features of structural steelwork. Types of bracing systems. Behavioral aspects and design of horizontal and vertical bracing systems. Design of steel columns.
