Learning Outcomes
The aim of the course is to introduce the postgraduate student in satellite communications emphasizing on subsystems, techniques and applications. The existing background in communication systems and antenna issues is enriched specializing in fields like radiolink theory, communication techniques, coding, multiple access, networks and Tx/Rx systems. Also, among the aims of the course is a state of the art update on key emerging technologies and applications as well as on future systems and innovative research areas.
Course Content (Syllabus)
1. Introduction (2 hours)
Historical overview, Financial Issues, Development of S.C., System Organization, Orbit Types, Applications – Services – ESA - the RCL-AUTh projects
2. Radio-link Analysis (6 hours)
Antenna parameters, Propagation in real conditions, Noise and SNR at the receiver input, Design limitations: Influence of the propagation media and mitigation - Regulations - Functional limitations, Overall link performance, Interference.
3. Baseband signals and Quality of Service (QoS) (2 hours)
Digital Telephony, Television - DVB-S, Radio - DAB, Data, Performance objectives, Service availability, Time Delay
4. Communication Techniques (2 hours)
Digital Transmission, Encryption – Channel encoding – Energy dispersion – Modulation, Error Probability, Spectral Efficiency, Decoding and Error Correction
5. Multiple Access (4 hours)
Call Traffic, Throughput of a Multiple Access Technique, FDMA, TDMA, CDMA, Fixed and On-demand assignment, Random Access.
6. Multibeam Satellite Networks (2 hours)
Multibeam satellites (frequency re-use, Interconnection techniques), Scanning beam interconnection, Intersatellite links (ISL)
7. Regenerative satellites (2 hours)
Radiolink via a regenerative satellite, Onboard processing, Switching
8. Communication Payload (4 hours)
Operation and characteristics, Repeater organization, Antenna coverage and technical characteristics, HELLASAT
