Course Content (Syllabus)
Nowadays, the consideration of issues regarding the fire safety of buildings is essential. The proper decisions concerning the design of buildings, as well as the implementation of fire-protection measures can modify fundamentally the fire and smoke propagation within buildings. As it is clear, the role of civil engineers is decisive in this direction. The objectives of the courses are as follows: - Holistic approach of building science and influential parameters of building design. - Fundamental principles of fire. - Evolution of fire technique. - Justification-standing-extent-results-damages-cost-statistics of fire. - Fire phenomena figures. - Ignition in natural combustions. - Elements of fire. - Fire triangle and control/suppression of fire. - Combustion types. - Controlled combustion. - Heat transfer and mechanisms. - Thermal inertia. - Description of fire development-evolution phases (fire stages). - Fire actions in the building sector. - Influence of extreme temperatures on the thermophysical and mechanical properties of materials. - Enclosure fire dynamics. - Central aspects and principles of buildings’ fire protection (building design directions and decisions). - Basic approaches of buildings’ fire protection (building design measures and methods). - Basic terminology of fire safety engineering. - Building categories. - Framework of fire safety regulations in Greece (national legislation). - Structure and content of studies regarding the fire safety passive design of buildings. - Active fire safety in buildings: Methods, means and systems to detect/extinguish fire. - Reaction to fire tests and fire resistance tests. - Analytical methodologies to determine the fire resistance of building components. - Assessment of fire heat loads in building structures. - Eurocode 1. - Fire safety engineering software.
