Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of the course, students will know the physical education and sports competition of the ancient peoples, especially the Greeks. It is also sought to understand the importance that the ancient Greeks gave to their sports festivals and especially to the Panhellenic games.
It is also intended that the students get to know the principles of ancient Greek philosophy, the philosophical views of the ancient Greek philosophers regarding body, soul, physical education and sports competition. The ethical dilemmas arising from the use of prohibited substances by modern sportsmen and women are also commented on.

Course Content (Syllabus)
1. Physical education in the ancient peoples of the East and Egypt.
2. Minoan and Mycenaean civilization (races, sports and dances).
3. Physical education in ancient Greece. Physical education in Sparta.
4. Physical education in Athens. Physical education in the rest of Greece.
5. The sanctuary of Olympia. Early history of Olympia. Olympic Games (sports, regulations).
6. Pythia, Nemea, Isthmia. (sports, regulations).
7. Problems connected with the Olympic Games.
8. Topics related to games and athletes (local games in ancient Greece, children's games and games, women's games).
9. Concept and object of philosophy. Ionian philosophers and other pre-Socratic philosophers.
10. Sophists. Herodotus and his philosophy on games and athletes. The Pythagorean philosophy of body and soul.
11. Socratic-Platonic philosophy of soul, body and physical education. Aristotelian philosophy of soul, body and physical education.
12. Ethical dilemmas from the use of prohibited chemical substances by athletes.
