Course Content (Syllabus)
The course examines the transition from the Ancient to the Medieval period, the gradual configuration of a new empire with Constantinople as its centre, the basic features, the evolution and the decline of the Byzantine Empire (324-1453). Week #1 General introduction, terminology, and history of the Byzantine Studies Week #2 Geographical boundaries of Byzantium and periods of Byzantine History Week #3 Sources of Byzantine History I Week #4 Sources of Byzantine History II – Auxiliary sciences Week #5 From Rome to Constantinople. Constantine the Great and the establishment of Constantinople. The factors of the Byzantine History. Political theory. Week #6 Special features and synopsis of the period (324-565): External enemies, internal history, heresies, Ecumenical Synods Week #7 Special features and synopsis of the period (565-867): The situation and the enemies in the Balkans, the West and the East. The appearance of Arabs and the threat of Constantinople, the Isaurian dynasty and the Iconoclasm Week #8 The Macedonian dynasty (867-1025): The victorious campaigns against the Arabs and the Bulgars, Byzantium and the West, Legislation. Week #9 The decline of the 11th century. The Comnenian and the Angelos dynasty (1081-1204): New enemies, Crusades and the capture of Constantinople (1204) Week #10 Special features and survey of the period (1204-1453): The peripheral Byzantine States, the recapture of Constantinople and the Ottoman expansion Week #11 The capture of 1453. Week #12 The heritage and the glory of Byzantium. Week #13 Recapitulation and preparation for the exams
