Learning Outcomes
Τo introduce the students to the art of the Italian renaissance, through the study of the works and artists that form a new artistic reality, that constituted the greatest fact of contemporary European culture. In this framework, the course will refer extensively on various art forms, like architecture, painting and sculpture.

Course Content (Syllabus)
SUBJECT • I. Introduction: Maniera bizantina (Cimabue): Italy's close relations with the East explain the prevalence of maniera bizantina throughout the Middle Ages in Italy. • Early Renaissance: 14th century (Trecento) • Giotto, Duccio and the 14th century Siena School • Early Renaissance: 15th century (Quattrocento) • The conquest of the mathematical perspective on space and the knowledge of human anatomy redefine representation of space and time at this time. • Florence: the gathering of artists in Florence around 1420 led to the production of works, whose influence on the course of modern art was decisive. Works of art (painting, sculpture, architecture) are part of the historical, political, economic context, factors that determine their field and mode of operation. Their technical and stylistic qualities are analyzed. • Mature or Classical Renaissance: 1500-1527 (Cinquecento) • Completion and departure from the conquests of the early phase: interest is now focused on the search for harmony and symmetry of compositions while theoretical principles allow much greater freedom of personal expression. • Florence and Milan: presents the life and work of painters such as Leonardo da Vinci and analyzes the way in which his pictorial and stylistic forms are related to the cultural and political developments of the time. • ΙΙ) Artists examined • Nicola Pizano • Giovanni Pisano • Chimabue and Maniera Greca • Giotto di Bondone • Duccio di Buoninsegna and Simone Martini • Ambrogio Lorenzetti • Brothers Limbourg and International Gothic Style • Filippo Brunelleschi • Lorenzo Ghiberti • Donatello • Masaccio • Piero della Francesca • Domenico Ghirlandaio • Sandro Boticelli • Leonardo da Vinci: Leonardo da Vinci.
