Learning Outcomes
After completing their second semester of graduate study in the interdisciplinary field of study of Sociology of Law, students should be able to: * have achieved an advanced knowledge of scientific research (seeking data from different bibliographic and electronic sources, processing and synthesizing the data, and finally presenting them in a logical and coherent manner) * have become familiar with the critical treatment and evalutation of alternative research hypotheses, with the logical construction of arguments and with the use of argumentation for the validation or repudiation of ideas, stances and approaches * have developed and sharpened their skills in research and writing, through the preparation and completion of a second research paper * have mastered the skills of presenting the results of their research, exhibiting advanced skills of oral communication, rhetoric and argumentation

Course Content (Syllabus)
Theories of justice. Historical and comparative approach of social and legal institutions. An introduction to the sociological methods of empirical research (e.g. questionnaires and interviews). How Sociology of Law helps contemporary legal theorists and practitioners enrich, improve and understand the existing legal system (Sociology of Law as Praxeology). Special thematic units, which treat more specific topics of study within Sociology of Law, indicatively: (i) theory and practice of Negotiation (with the use of simulated role-playing games) and Legal Negotiations as an introduction to Mediation (ii) the economic crisis, globalization and the interplay between the social sciences of Law and Economics (iii) Gender and the Law (gender equality, gender discrimination, gender identity) (iv) social deviance (theories on deviant behavior, crime and punishment) (v) Law and Culture (vi) Law and Bioethics (vii) Minorities, xenophobia, migration, the refugee crisis (viii) nation, national ideologies and the State (ix) Information society - social network theories (x) the legal professions today - the shifts in legal culture
