Οn successful completion of the course, students will:
- have knowledge of the specific issues of hagiography of the Byzantine and post-Byzantine periods
- know in depth the major writers of hagiographic works from the 8th to the 19th c.
- be able to research the sources and secondary literature

Course Content (Syllabus)
The most important milestones in Byzantine and post-Byzantine Hagiography will be presented in the lectures:
1. Hagiography of the Iconoclastic Period: The ‘golden age’ of Byzantine Hagiography (New Vitae for New Saints)
2. Saint Theodore the Stoudite and His Hagiographical Work
3. The Ecumenical Patriarchs of the Iconoclastic Period and Their Hagiographical Work: Germanos I, Tarasios, Methodios I, and Photios the Great
4. The hagiographical peak of the 9th and 10th centuries and the Byzantine encyclopedism: the new trends (translation, collection and codification of hagiographical texts)
5. The imperial hagiography: Leo VI the Wise, Constantine VII the Porphyrogenite and the Imperial Menologia
6. Niketas David Paphlagon and Symeon Metaphrastes (the Translator)
7. The Byzantine Hagiography of the 11th and 12th centuries
8. The Recovery during the Palaeologan Period and its main representatives: Constantine Akropolites and Theodore Metochites
9. Hagiography in the era of Byzantine Hesychasm: Gregory Palamas, Philotheus Kokkinos, Nikephoros Gregoras, Nikephoros Kallistos Xanthopoulos, Kallistos I
10. Trends and persons in post-Byzantine Hagiography: Development of literature on neomartyrs, translation, collection, and publication of hagiographical texts (Agapios Landos, Hierotheos of Iviron, etc.)
11. The neomartyrs and their biographers (15th - 18th c.): Manuel of Corinth, Meletios Syrigos, Ioannis Kariophylles, Father Ionas Kausokalybites, Kesarios Dapondes
12. The hymnological-hagiographical work of the Kollyvades (Makarios Notaras, Athanasios Parios)
13. The hymnological-hagiographical work of the Kollyvades (Nicodemus the Hagiorite, Christopher Prodromites)
