Learning Outcomes
By the end of the course, students will be able:
1) To acquaint themselves with the historical context, within which the Ecumenical Movement was formed.
2) To approach the history, the structure and the function of the institutional expressions of the Ecumenical Movement.
3) To evaluate the importance of the Orthodox witness (martyria) in the Ecumenical Movement.
4) To appreciate the importance of the other Christian traditions.
5) To be aware of the international environment within which the Orthodox theology is articulated.

Course Content (Syllabus)
The historical and theological framework from the division of Christianity to the search of visible unity is presented. Particular emphasis is placed on the openness of the Ecumenical Patriarchate to the rest of the Christian world, as well as on its participation in the establishment and function of the institutional expressions of the modern Ecumenical Movement. The history and contribution of both the World Council of Churches and other regional organizations such as the Conference of European Churches is systematically examined. The stance of the Roman Catholic Church towards the Ecumenical Movement throughout time is analyzed, as well as the ecumenical and, in general, theological work of the Second Vatican Council. Finally, the history, methodology, results and perspectives of the dialogues of the Orthodox Church with the Roman Catholic Church and the Ancient Eastern Churches are presented.

1) Theory and methodology of ecumenical dialogue.
2) Early contacts of the Christian world (19th–20th century).
3) History, structure and function of the World Council of Churches and regional Ecumenical Organizations (Conference of European Churches).
4) Leading figures of the Ecumenical Movement.
5) The contribution of the Ecumenical Patriarchate to the modern Ecumenical Movement.
6) Roman Catholic Church and Ecumenical Movement (From reticence to active participation).
7) Ecumenical Movement and International Relations.
8) Reactions to the Ecumenical Movement.
9) The bilateral Theological Dialogue between the Orthodox Church and the Roman Catholic Church (Problems and perspectives).
10) The bilateral Theological Dialogue of the Orthodox Church with the tradition of the Reformation.
11) The bilateral Theological Dialogue of the Orthodox Church with the Ancient Eastern Churches.
12) The bilateral Theological Dialogue of the Orthodox Church with the Anglican Communion.
13) Relations of the Orthodox Church with the Old Catholic Church.
