Learning Outcomes
At the end of the semester, the successful student will be able to: 1. interpret the interdependent relationship between the sacred Mysteries and the spiritual life. 2. know the content and the basic theological positions of Nicholas Cabasilas, as it is expressed in his work "On the Life of Christ". 3. explain the positions of the Greek Fathers on the frequency and presuppositions for participation in the Divine Eucharist. 4. express the Orthodox Christian teaching concerning the value and importance of fasting and morality for the spiritual life of believers.

Course Content (Syllabus)
The relationship between worship and spirituality, the sacred Mysteries as the axis of spiritual life, prayer, regulations on fasting and its meaning, and similar issues will be examined during the semester. 1. Introduction to the course: Institution and Charisma in Orthodox Tradition 2. The Sacrament of Baptism as the foundation of spiritual life 3. The stages of spiritual perfection: purification-illumination-theosis 4. The relationship between common worship and private prayer 5. Noetic Prayer: The "PhiloKalia" and hesychastic theology 6. "On the Life in Christ" by Nicholas Cabasilas 7. Aspects of the Sacrament of repentance and holy confession 8. Frequency and presuppositions for participation in the Eucharist I: the patristic teaching of the Byzantine period 9. Frequency and presuppositions for participation in the divine Eucharist II: The Kollibades Fathers 10. Ascetic tradition and liturgical witness 11.
