Course Content (Syllabus)
This is a seminary course that is taught in the form of lectures by patrologists, biblical and systematic theologians. These lectures present the strong connection of the Church Fathers with the Holy Scriptures and the Church Tradition. The Fathers, even in their theological battles for the defence of the orthodox dogma, functioned mainly as interpreters of the Scripture, since the substance of faith was expressed in the texts of the Scripture. The Scripture, nevertheless, was not the sole carrier of the Tradition of the Church. An equally important carrier of the truth of the faith, at least during the early Christian times, is also the oral tradition, used by the Alexandrian theologians and the Cappadocian fathers as well. The seminar also makes reference to basic methodological questions (interpretation principles and presuppositions of the Church Fathers) as well as to special issues that relate to the threefold connection of Fathers-Scriptures-Tradition and emerge in different periods, from the early centuries to the period of the Ottoman rule. 1. Introductory questions of the Seminar. The fathers of the Church and the two forms of tradition. 2. Basic hermeneutic prerequisites in the thought of the fathers of the Church. 3. Origen and the allegorical interpretation of the Bible. 4. Biblical passages interpreted by Fathers and Ecclesiastical writers within the framework of the antirrhetic literature I. 5. The question of Tradition during the period of the Arian Controversy. 6. Principles of patristic interpretation in the fourth century: Athanasius the Great. 7. A dialogue between contemporary and patristic Hermeneutics. From saint John Chrysostom and the liturgical practice to the theories of speech and performative analysis. 8. Biblical passages interpreted by Fathers and Ecclesiastical writers within the framework of the antirrhetic literature II. 9. Theotokos in the tradition of the Church through the patristic texts. 10. Saint Nicodemus the Hagiorite as an interpreter of the Epistles of St Paul the Apostle. 11. The Byzantine Catenae as an example of reception of the Holy Scripture. The example of the catena on St Mark’s Gospel. 12. Saint Nicodemus the Hagiorite as an interpreter of the Catholic Epistles. 13. The Church Fathers and the Tradition in Modern and Contemporary Theological Thought
