Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of the course, students will be able: 1) to have a historical and spiritual guide to get to know the city of Thessaloniki, 2) to analyze the political, administrative and geographical conditions of Exarchate of Thessaloniki, the period of her greatest glorious as a supervisor of Eastern Illiricus. To know, also, the phenomenon of Vicariate inder bishop of Rome, 3) To know general political and ecclesiastical reformations in South East Europe, in the ottoman domain (19th – 20th century). In general, to know the glorious past, in art and culture, in this historical and unique city of Thessaloniki. With this knowledge, the students will be able to appreciate the present. There are achievements in Thessaloniki in all areas, mainly in the spirit, culture, art, merchant and studies. The historical port of Thessaloniki has a geopolitical importance. It is the gate of merchant and culture from and to the countries of South Eastern Europe. The port, the white tower and Theodosiana walls put their stamp on it, put their logo.

Course Content (Syllabus)
This course gives useful information about the central developments to administrative, social, geographical, ecclesiastical and law-regulation history of Thessaloniki from its foundation until today. Are emphasized, mainly, the essential administrative, ecclesiastical and political differences, focusing in Thessaloniki in the ottoman domain, the period about 19th and 20th century. It was a period of political and ecclesiastical reformations in South East Europe. The city of Thessaloniki with intense religiousness, was, for many centuries, the most important spiritual center. Course outline-Syllabus: 1. The beginning of Church of Thessaloniki. Historical tour. 2. The concepts «Εxarchate» and «Exarchaton». 3. Basic administrative political development focusing in Thessaloniki. 4. The institution of Themata. 5. Administrative-geographical conditions of Church of Thessaloniki. The limits of Exarchate of Thessaloniki. 6. The historical, political, ecclesiastical phenomenon of Vicariate of Thessaloniki, under Bishop of Rome. 7. Administrative-ecclesiastical changes of Metropolis of Thessaloniki under the jurisdiction of the Ecumenical Patriarchate. 8. Thessaloniki under the ottoman yoke: Vilaetion of Thessaloniki, Satzakion of Thessaloniki, Holy Metropolis of Thessaloniki, 1870-1912. 9. Administrative and political differences of Thessaloniki in the ottoman domain (19th – 20th century). 10. Church of Thessaloniki in the formation of doctrine, canon law and the culture. 11. The bishoprics of Metropolis of Thessaloniki. 12. The Provincial Synod of Thessaloniki. 13. Distinguist ecclesiastical personalities of Church of Thessaloniki.
