Learning Outcomes
With the successful completion of the course students will be able to follow the way in which the ideology of national mindedness was expressed, to distinguish its social base and its ideological characteristics, to separate patriotism from nationalism and to study the relationship between nationalism and national mindedness in the USA and Europe in the 21st century

Course Content (Syllabus)
The module examines the formation of the ideology of national mindedness from the interwar period to the present day. It examines its development, its social bases and its ideological characteristics. Initially, the module analyses the definitions of "nation" according to the French and the German version and the content of the concept of nationalism. It distinguishes between patriotism and nationalism and it explores the term national consciousness and the Great Idea. Through concrete examples of the Greek historical reality, the concept of the people and the nation in the interwar period is examined, particularly during the Metaxas dictatorship, the notion of national mindedness during WWII, as expressed in the speech and practices of the Security Battalions and nationalist organizations, as well as the political use and the evolution of the concept in civil war and post-civil war Greece. In addition, the adventures of the concept of 'nationality' at the time of the crisis are examined in the light of the economic and political context. Finally the module examines the relation between nationalism and national mindedness in USA and in Europe in the 21st century
