Course Content (Syllabus)
Literature has proven to be a privileged field for the disciplines of cultural and social history, either illustrating or challenging public history or major historical narratives. The course proposes a series of central themes (Enlightenment and French Revolution, Industrialization & Labor, World Wars & Resistance, Colonialism & Decolonization, Totalitarianism & Dystopias) to be studied independently and can be rotated per semester. The purpose of the course is to highlight aspects of the socio-political and ideological changes that brought about major phenomena, as they were captured by European and/or world literary production. With a corpus of texts from selected literary works of different national literatures, but also utilising non-fictional sources/documents of Western literature, we see how diverse authors represent (converging or diverging) the upheavals and rearrangements in the rapidly changing world from the 18th century onwards .
