Learning Outcomes
After the successful completion of the course, students will be able to understand the key phases of the period from the end of the Cold War, after the dissolution of the Soviet Union in 1991, until today in the economic, social and political field. More specifically, they will understand: Τhe profound changes on the world political map brought about by the dissolution of the USSR and the politico-military impact on post-Soviet democracies and Eastern Europe. The leading position of the US as the only global super-power The new global landscape shaped by the terrorist attacks of September 11 and the the war on terror The economic, social and political developments in Europe after the Cold War and the path to European integration The new economic and political order in Latin America, Africa and Southeast Asia The emergence of China as a global power and its competition with the US The demographic changes, migration, the role of technology The quest for new energy resources and routes and the climate crisis

Course Content (Syllabus)
The module runs through the post-Cold War era from the end of the Cold War, after the dissolution of the Soviet Union in 1991, to the present day. The key phases of this course in the economic, social and political field are examined and analyzed. The legacy of the Cold War. Brief overview of the processes and causes of the collapse of communist regimes in Eastern Europe and the USSR. The profound changes on the world political map. The politico-strategic impact on the Republics of the Caucasus The USA as a global superpower and its leading position in the new world order. The unipolar international system. The Pax Americana The attacks of September 11, 2001. The war on terror and the war in Afghanistan. The American occupation of Iraq. The new landscape in the Middle East. Europe after the Cold War. The unification of Europe. Challenges and dilemmas in the 21st century The rise of neoliberalism. The global financial crisis, the ensuing international recession and the European sovereign debt crisis. Causes, consequences and measures taken. The "Arab Spring" - revolutions in Tunisia, Egypt and Bahrain and civil wars in Libya, Syria and Yemen. The new political and economic order in Latin America. In search of a substantial decolonization. The emergence of China as a global pole of power and as a great economic powerhouse. The trade war between China and the USA. Africa. Rates of economic development, China's increased interest, armed conflicts, international relations. The global competition for natural resources. The climate crisis. Causes. Effects.

Description
The score in each course is determined by the teacher who is obliged to organize written and/or oral examinations at his discretion. The score in each course follows the scale of numbers from one (1) to ten (10). The basis of success is number five (5). Each course is examined at the end of the semester which was taught as well as in the September exam period. The score is derived from a) the level of knowledge about the subject (b) The ability to analyse and synthesize c) Understanding the subject
