Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of the course, students will have acquired knowledge about means and production technologies, properties and uses of wood products such as engineered products (posts, stakes, sawn timber, parquet flooring, wood veneers), composite products from veneers, chips, fibers (plywood, LVL, laminated wood, chipboard, fiberboard, OSB) as well as other composite products. They will also have acquired knowledge about wood improvement technologies (impregnation, drying, chemical - thermal - mechanical modification, shaping, densification, etc).
Course Content (Syllabus)
Wood improvement treatments: Drying (importance, natural - artificial drying, equipment, techniques, drying defects and treatments), Impregnation (Impregnants, impregnation methods, success factors, properties of impregnated wood), Bonding (bonding fundamentals, adhesives, bonding agents, natural wood adhesion, autogenous bonding), Disinfection of wood (heat treatment, fumigation, other methods), Mechanical treatment (sawing, chipping, surface treatments), Chemical/thermal modification, shaping-densification (bending, impregnation densification, mechanical densification, hydro-thermo-mechanical densification, hybrid methods, surface densification, bulk densification). Production technologies, properties and uses of industrial wood products: Engineered products (sawn timber, posts, piles), Composite products based on wood veneers, wood chips, wood fibers (plywood, LVL, glued laminated timber, particleboard, fibreboard, OSB) and other composite products.
